Job title:           Communications Intern

Location:         UNFPA, Jordan Hadzi Konstatinov Dzinot 23, 1000, Skopje, North Macedonia

Full/Part-time:  Part-time (20 hours per week)

Duration:          3 months, with 3 months possible extension

Start date:        1st of April 2020

Under the direct supervision of the Communications Assistant and guidance from the Head of Office, the Intern will support the office in the areas of communications, research and analysis.

A work-plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon. Periodic progress meetings will lead to a beneficial environment for the Intern to enhance her/his skills and capacity in areas related to UNFPA’s mandate.

UNFPA CO North Macedonia is seeking candidates that transform, inspire and deliver high impact and sustained results. We need interns who are exceptional in how they manage the resources entrusted to them and who commit to deliver excellence in programme results. The intern will support the implementation of the Communications and Advocacy Plan of the office for 2020.

The expected duration of the engagement is 3 months, with possibility for extension for another 3 months, subject to satisfactory performance.

Under the direct supervision of the Communications Assistant, the Communications Intern will undertake the following tasks:

  • Under the guidance and supervision of the Communications Assistant, write, edit, and upload text and multimedia content, including feature articles and interviews, to online communication platforms 
  • Assist in creating and designing the Social Media creatives for all social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc.)
  • Support the UNFPA Communications Assistant with social media strategies and plans for upcoming events and other social media contents.
  • Support the organization of events related to corporate communications strategies and programmes.
  • Collect press articles in national, regional, international press that pertain to SRH, CRSV, PD -related issues and to work of UNFPA;
  • Assist with media monitoring and preparation of media monitoring reports/summaries;
  • Classify and maintain adequate stock of Communications materials, incl. photographs;
  • Contribute to the production of infographics and visual products, such as snapshots, maps and dashboards.
  • Undertake lessons learned review of successful and unsuccessful communication experiences and share observations/findings with Communications Assistant and Senior Management so that best practices benefit the Fund’s communication work, and
  • Perform other duties as required

Results/Expected Outputs:

  • Assist in writing/editing at least 2 to 3 press releases/features for media outlets;
  • Assist in creating at least 2 to 3 creative designs for social media campaigns;
  • Regularly update CO WEB Site and social media, and
  • Regularly collecting press articles for at least 2 to 3 press clippings

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • University Degree, MA student or recent completion of a Master’s level degree in a relevant field e.g. Journalism, Advertising or Public Relations, Political Science or International Relations;
  • Experience in media communications including social media is strongly preferable;
  • Demonstrable research skills; preparation of written content of high quality;
  • Good knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud platforms;
  • Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds;
  • Preferably some experience in working with development agencies, including in volunteer capacity.

Language Skills: Fluency in Macedonian and English (oral and written).     

Learning Elements:

  • Increased understanding of the UNFPA and the Programme Division within UNFPA
  • Understand the UNFPA mandate and policies, including regional set-up
  • Understand UNFPA programme design and delivery mechanisms
  • Understand the dynamics of operational and programme support and communications to the field, and sub-region
  • Learn UN technical language, working procedures, and coordination mechanisms
  • Write and formulate substantive documents
  • Network with UN colleagues
  • Work experience as a team member in a multicultural setting

Financial Aspects:

Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA. The costs associated with an intern's participation in the programme must be assumed either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the students themselves, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements.

However, they receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, if not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation, or scholarship programme. The amount of the stipend varies according to the duty station. In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins. UNFPA does not provide medical insurance for interns.
