Skopje, 6 April 2023 - Finding a new approach to institutionalize predictions and collaborative practices, in order to move from reactive decision-making to resilient and transformative policy-making, was one of the topics of the Symposium on Anticipatory Migration Governance, held online in Skopje.

The event was organized by the UNHCR, IOM, UNFPA, the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia and the expert group Demos Helsinki, opened by the Vice Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Fatmir Bitici. In addition, international experts from the fields of migration, demographic resilience, displacement due to climate change and predictions of migration flows, also spoke at the event.

The participants also discussed conventional migration governance methods that are no longer sufficient to address the complex and multidimensional nature of the rapidly evolving migration landscape.

Part of the discussion took place in the direction of finding a new approach that would institutionalize predictions and collaborative practices, in order to move from reactive decision-making to resilient and transformative policy-making.

This Symposium provided an insight into the anticipatory approach to policy-making developed in the Republic of North Macedonia, and explored the alternative futures and new perspectives for migration governance. Representatives from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia and the expert group of Demos Helsinki were some of the speakers at the event.
