Skopje, October 30, 2023 - The results of the joint project "Evidence-based migration policy, planning and discourse in North Macedonia" were presented today in Skopje to representatives from the Government, UN agencies, national institutions, the civil sector and the academic community involved in migration management and data collection in the country. The goal of the project is to support national institutions in improving the management of demographic migration dynamics in the country.

"We commend the achievements of the joint project and the best practices in implementing the program, a joint effort highlighting the crucial role of migration as a determinant of demography, along with factors such as fertility and mortality," stated Afrodita Shalja, Head of the UNFPA Office in North Macedonia, in her opening remarks at the event.

With the project supported by the United Nations Migration Multi-Partner Trust Fund, implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) under the coordination of the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in North Macedonia, support is provided to policymakers and representatives of institutions to develop and implement evidence-based coordinated migration policies and enhance inter and intra-institutional mechanisms for data exchange and collaboration among key institutions responsible for migration management.

The project also includes activities to humanize the societal narrative about migrants and refugees as actors contributing to the development of society.

"I am very pleased that the strong partnership between the UN, state institutions, civil society, and the academic community has resulted in new and innovative approaches in the development of migration policy in the country," said Rossana Dudziak, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in North Macedonia. "This joint program has made a significant contribution to North Macedonia's progress towards achieving the sustainable development goals," she added.
