Skopje, May/June 2024 - A series of media products, including articles, video and audio stories, have been developed by young people in various municipalities across North Macedonia, supported by the United Nations Population Fund – UNFPA, within the framework of the joint UN regional project "Youth for Inclusion, Equality, and Trust”.
A total of 10 media products were developed by 14 young activists from different ethnic, cultural, and social groups, working under the mentorship of professional journalists. Six video, one audio and three print stories were developed focusing on diversity and combating stereotypes, inclusion of the marginalized groups, youth activism and promoting constructive narratives and values in different local communities.
The media products highlight the need for providing greater opportunities and support for young people, including the establishment of youth centres and local youth councils. The lack of spaces for young people to socialize and organize is a recurring theme, emphasizing the importance of youth engagement in the decision-making processes. The products also call attention to the challenges faced by marginalized groups, including people with disabilities and the Roma community.
UNFPA North Macedonia has also successfully supported nine youth-led actions across North Macedonia, fostering inclusivity, intercultural learning, and positive narratives in various municipalities.
These actions engaged over 500 young people with diverse backgrounds, focusing on issues such as community development, gender equality, constructive narratives and inclusivity. Through various activities, the local youth actions empowered young people to become agents of change, fostering mutual understanding and trust among diverse groups. By addressing local challenges and promoting social awareness, the initiatives, ranging from hackathons to workshops and artistic expressions, catalysed positive social change and contributed to a more inclusive and equitable society.
In Gostivar, a 26-hour hackathon empowered 30 students to develop innovative solutions. Makedonski Brod witnessed the active participation of 40 young people in impactful workshops. Meanwhile, in Tetovo, 20 young artists expressed themselves through vibrant graffiti canvases. An inspiring example of youth-led environmental action took place in Bosilovo, where 15 young people spearheaded a PET plastic collection event that attracted over 100 participants. These diverse initiatives highlight UNFPA's commitment to empowering young people, enabling them to drive the positive change within their communities.
The implemented youth actions not only served as a platform for young people to connect at the local level, but also advanced the project's goals of promoting inclusion, equality, trust, and intercultural dialogue across diverse communities.
